About the object
The densely-packed buildings of the village characterise this view of the townscape. To the left and right of the picture are the large buildings and chimneys of the two textile factories, which were converted to steam power from around 1858. The canal system visible at the bottom of the valley, controlled by sluice gates, was used to irrigate the meadows.
