About the object

Arm ring for the upper arm made from shell material (trochus) with fine, incised black ornamentation. The rings were worn by men and women on the upper arm and were considered very valuable. Their manufacture was very time consuming. Usually, individual turns were knocked off the shell and polished to expose the mother-of-pearl layer - work performed by women. Men added the incised patterns on the outside. Ownership rights existed on the patterns.
