About the object
The labourer in the foreground seems to be enjoying his lunch break. His semi-frontal posture is unusual for Morat, who usually aligned his staffage figures with the motif, i.e. looking towards it. There is a lot of activity going on behind the resting labourer: on the road parallel to the Wutach, teams of horses, possibly carrying textiles, are visible.
