Extremely rare in Germany, the forest dormouse is a rodent belonging to the Gliridae family, alongside the hazel dormouse and the European edible dormouse. So far it has only been observed in two remote valleys in Bavaria. The forest dormouse prefers habitats that offer ample structures in which to hide, such as mixed woodlands with deadwood. On account of its extreme rarity in Germany, it is a protected species (Species Protection Ordinance § 1, Clause 1).
