Profile Portrait of a Lady, 1770 - 1800
About the object
This lady's powdered wig towers steeply upward, twice the height of her head. Bows, ribbons and a wreath of leaves adorn her epic artificial bouffant. Originating in the French royal court of Marie-Antoinette, this hairstyle became very popular among ladies in the 1770s. It epitomises the proliferation of Rococo forms and ornament.
