About the object

Fur-clad, shaggy-haired humans are depicted amidst rank shrubbery with flowers and fruits. These "wild men" symbolise primeval strength and freedom in harmony with nature. As armorial supporters, they safeguard the continued existence of the aristocracy, in a similar way to patron saints. The coat of arms depicted on the tapestry is that of Philipp von Wolfskehl and his wife Barbara, née Waldeck von Iben.
