Dragon and parrot tapestry, um 1330
About the object
Originally from the Adelhausen Dominican monastery in Freiburg, this rug originally served as a bench drape or wall hanging. It comprises ten similar woven woollen panels. The animal motifs - parrots and monstrous dragon-like creatures - probably date back to oriental templates in textile art. It is not known whether they have any religious significance.
