Daphne removes a cicada from Chloe’s dress, 1800
About the object
This sheet is an illustration of the pastoral poem »Les Amours pastorales de Daphnis et de Chloé« (The Pastoral Love of Daphnis and Chloe) by the Classical Greek novelist and Romance writer Longos. The foundlings Daphnis and Chloe are depicted as they watch their flock together in an idyllic setting. Daphnis delicately removes a cicada that has hidden itself between Chloe's breasts. Prud'hon describes the awakening love in the hearts of the young shepherd couple.
