Two Apostles, um 1760
About the object
The apostles in question here are Peter and Paul. According to New Testament, Peter and Paul are considered to be Jesus' successors and founders of the Christian Church. As such, the book is an attribute for both men and symbolises their role as mediators of the Word of God. These design for the apostle figures, so-called bozzetti, were intended for sculptures for the high altar in Kirchhofen near Staufen. They were placed to the side of the central altar and would have been sculpted more elaborately.
