About the object
The frontispiece shows the bust of La Fontaine in the forest on a pedestal, around which the fabulist Aesop and several animals, the protagonists in the fables, are gathered. With a total of 277 illustrations of exceptional quality, the four volumes are a highlight of 18th-century French book illustration.
