About the object
An essential feature of a medieval city was its wall, which offered protection to the citizens and formed the boundary for the inner legal district of the community. A double circular wall with a total of nine gate towers surrounded medieval Freiburg along with its suburbs, in addition there were four smaller gates and four watchtowers. Gatekeepers oversaw the gates fitted with heavy iron-studded doors and portcullises. The gates were opened during the day to admit merchants and farmers into the city with their goods and chattels.
