About the object
The Benedictine monastery is actually on the edge of the valley. Morat has chosen a viewing point whereby the monastery shifts visually to the centre of the composition. The narrow valleys are widened in favour of a panoramic view and pronounced differences in elevation are reduced. The slender trees used as staffage in the foreground are a reference to the Black Forest fir, which typifies the region.
