Essays in idleness, 1810

About the object

Eishi based this print on the collection of essays Essays in Idleness by the Buddhist monk Yoshida Kenko (1284-1350). The writings are considered to be a jewel of medieval literature in Japan. The artist renders the Buddhist concepts of death and impermanence described by Kenko in terms of the beauty of the moment via the portrait of two beautiful women.
