New Year’s Eve Foxfires by the Hackberry Tree from the series »One Hundred Famous Sites of Edo«, 1857
About the object
According to legend, foxes from the Inari shrine - a Shinto shrine dedicated to the fox god - congregate each year at a hackberry tree to celebrate their New Year ritual. The flames emanating from the foxes' snouts symbolise their relationship with the supernatural.
