Mary Immaculate, 1760/65
About the object
The "untainted one" is standing on the globe, which is encircled by a serpent. This idea behind this topos is an understanding of Mary as a person who is pure and free from sin. She is able to resist temptation, symbolised by the serpent, because she has been chosen by God. A depiction of this kind is often accompanied by twelve stars. Wentzinger also implemented the "Maria Immaculata" topos in monumental form.
