About the object
The figure was originally part of the altarpiece of the Chapel of the Antonites in Freiburg. The corresponding named saint resides in Obersimonswald. The Order of St Anthony dedicated itself to caring for the sick. St Roch was chiefly invoked against the plague. He had himself fallen victim to the disease.
