Fidelis Sporer

Lamentation over the Dead Christ, um 1780

About the object

This group of figures has been fashioned from a single block, which is perhaps why it conveys such a cohesive bond between the figures. Baby Jesus is cradled in Mary's lap, affectionately supported by her head and arm. John and Mary Magdalene are immersed in prayer and are supporting Mary in her mourning. The harmonious composition and the fine, almost soft handling of the material is a distinguishing feature of Sporer's diminutive sculpture. Sporer was a pupil of Johann Christian Wentzinger.
