About the object

Nets made from coconut bast, as in this case, were used by women to catch small fish in the lagoons. According to Antonie Brandies, they were also used to introduce small fish to freshwater lakes on the islands. The fish could accustom themselves to their new environment and were kept thus as a source of food.

Sendung Nov 1901, SAF C3/241/2): "Netz um ganz kleine Fische zu fangen. Kokosbast. Die kl. Fische werden dann in einen kl. See welcher süßes Wasser enthält gesetzt." Die aus Nauru stammenden Objekte der Brandeis-Sammlung wurden allem Anschein nach vom dortigen Bezirkshauptmann Ludwig Kaiser gesammelt (SAF C3/241/1).
