About the object

Fleshed-out coconuts, which were then smooth inside, were fastened with string and taken aboard on long sea voyages to be used as drinking vessels as well to collect rainwater. They could be closed using a plug made from palm leaves. Receptacles of this kind, tied in a simple way, were hung from palm trees to collect rainwater. A dried pandanus leaf was affixed to the trunk to direct the rainwater into the hole of the coconut.
