Charles-Nicolas Cochin

Concert of angels, 1759

About the object

This detailed drawing served as a model for a print - more precisely, a vignette on the book of poetry by Saint Francis de Pompignan titled »Poésies sacrées et philosophiques tirées des Livres Saints« (Sacred and Philosophical Poems from the Holy Scriptures). Despite the small format, the artist achieves a pronounced spatial effect by placing the groups of angels in the foreground or middle ground. The ambitious view onto the heads of two angels through the sides of the harp reveals a high degree of draftsmanship.
