About the object

Since the early dynastic period, stone vessels have been made from various types of hard rock in a wide variety of shapes. The outer shape of the vessel was initially carved out of stone and then the inside was hollowed out with simple drills. This process required a high degree of high precision and technical skill. The slender vessel made of calcite alabaster with a light grain has a lip on the rim and a slightly indented wall. The hollowed-out inner cavity is cylindrical. Stone vessels of this type were generally used to store fragrant unguents or make-up. As they kept the valuable cleansing products cool, they were guaranteed to last and were consequently popular grave goods.
