About the object
The last Grand Duke of Baden, Friedrich II, was portrayed here nine years before his abdication in 1918. The three-quarter-length portrait depicts the regent within an oval-shaped composition, which is given extra depth by addition of shadows. The radiant, bright red collar of Frederick's uniform stands out from the otherwise muted colours.
