About the object
In this unusual double portrait, Winterhalter experiments with the combination of different profiles. The young Italian girl is rendered both in half-profile and full profile, with shoulder and breast sections merely hinted at in each case. During his stay in Italy, Winterhalter painted the model at least three times.
