Georg Balder
Portrait of Melchior Trescher, 1866
About the object
Georg Balder painted the portraits of the Trescher couple in Freiburg in 1866. For the portrait of Melchior, Balder chose a popular pose and had Trescher’s left hand disappear behind the lapel of his jacket. The pose was made famous by Napoleon, but it had already been considered both distinguished and an expression of self-confidence since the 18th century.
