About the object
The somewhat garish colour palette and individual pictorial elements (bridge, river, boat), the asymmetrical composition and the finely nuanced areas of colour evoke associations with the aesthetics of 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints. But the realistic style and influence of Neue Sachlichkeit (the New Objectivity) is also clearly recognisable in the painting.
