Funeral Procession of St Ursula, 1440/50

About the object

The panel is from a winged altar depicting scenes from the legend of Ursula: the British princess and her 11,000 confederates were murdered by the Huns on their return from Rome outside the walls of Cologne. In this portrayal, canons carry Ursula's body in a procession through the Cologne city gate, recognisable by virtue of the city's coat of arms.
