About the object
The apostle James is depicted with pilgrims' emblems: pilgrim's hat, staff and shell. Margaret, who was martyred around 300, carries a dragon as her attribute. According to legend, she was attacked by the dragon in her dungeon and upon her making the sign of the cross, the dragon vanished. The panel was presumably the outside wing of an altarpiece.
