Christine Bauer, née Stockmar, came from Coburg and, as a child, maintained contact with the aristocratic Saxe-Coburg family. The pastel was created as a companion piece to the portrait of her husband Heinrich, who died in the Battle of Aspern. Their daughter Karoline became a successful actress in the Biedermeier period.
