Portrait of a Lady with a Black Bonnet, 1846
About the object
In many parts of Württemberg, women wore a so-called “Granatnuster” (garnet choker) as part of their costume. These multi-row necklaces of garnet beads could be placed tightly around the neck, as in this example from the Reutlinger Alb region. Those who could not afford genuine garnet made do with a cheaper alternative.
