Bertold Schwarz, 1899
About the object
In May 1366, the citizens of Freiburg fired shots at the ducal Castle on the Schlossberg. According to local tradition, gunpowder had been invented shortly before by the Franciscan friar, Berthold Schwarz in Freiburg and is supposed to have given the citizens a decisive advantage. Although the monk is indeed a legendary figure with regard to the invention of gunpowder, or black powder as it is also known, its invention is actually attributed to a mid-14th century chemist and artilleryman who worked in Freiburg.
