Gretel Haas-Gerber
Self-portrait, 1997
About the object
In the last two years of her life, Gretel Haas-Gerber focused on self-portraits once more, a topic which she repeatedly revisited during the seven-decade span of her career. Almost completely blind, she made large-format chalk drawings. The outline of her body is diffuse, the lines, sometimes condensed, sometimes loosely distributed, are tentative graphic explorations of the body and the psyche. Practically dematerialised, almost only as an idea, Gretel Haas-Gerber shows us more a perceived than an observed, compositional representation of herself.
