Hendrick Goltzius
Allegory of Fame and History (Posterity), 1586
About the object
The final sheet of the series juxtaposes symbols of mortality and rebirth. Fama, blowing her fanfare, floats above a tomb whose inscriptions praise the immortality of virtue. Hoverring above the kneeling Posteritas is a winged hourglass, while a phoenix rises from the flames out of the small altar in her hand.
