Hendrick Goltzius

Horatius Cocles, um 1586

About the object

During an attack by the Etruscans, the Romans are said to have torn down the bridge leading to Rome across the Tiber. Only Horatius Cocles remained on the other bank to defend it, and he fought off the attackers. He then swam safely to Rome in full armour. The torsion in his striding posture lends dynamism to the composition.
