Hendrick Goltzius

Oceanus, 1590

About the object

Okeanos, a sea or river god, glides over the water on a dolphin at breakneck speed. Instead of a trident, typical for Neptune, he is holding a paddle in his hand. As an oblique visual axis, it structures the composition and gives compositional support to the figure, which is reaching out in all directions into space.
