Hendrick Goltzius

According to Carel van Mander, Goltzius managed to deceive his contemporaries about the authorship of this work. Engraved in the style of Albrecht Dürer, connoisseurs thought they had a work by the German artist in front of them. To achieve this, he even temporarily erased his monogram and the facial features of the figure on the threshold – a self-portrait of the artist.
