Ovid's doctrine of the four ages begins with the golden age, which is ruled by the art of love. In line with contemporary understanding, Goltzius presents the theme as a story of decline, in which human beings are ejected from their paradisiacal state into the hopelessness of their existence and made to face their ultimate demise.
