About the object
A sketched outline for the painting Italienische Wallfahrer (Italian Pilgrims) depicts mother and child in close contact. In contrast to the painting, the mother seems to be holding the child's head with her hand. The drawing was probably made in preparation for a second version of the painting - now lost - in which this alteration is visible.
