This illustration to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's novel La Nouvelle Héloïse (The New Héloïse) shows the young Julie with her lover Saint-Preux. She has taken him to a park where she gives him her first kiss. The young couple is accompanied by Claire, Julie's cousin and faithful confidant. This striking illustration of such a key moment has been taken from Rousseau's edition from 1774-1783. It represents a significant contribution to the popularity of this scene in the novel.
