So-called sample or pattern books are collections of different motifs: pictorial scenes, figures or even individual details, such as faces or ornaments. Medieval artists used such templates time and again when composing new artworks. In this instance, we see Christ in conversation with the customs officer Zacchaeus on a tree in the upper section, below it the equestrian saints, Theodore (right) and George (left).
