Rudolf Großmann
Julius Meier-Graefe, um 1920-1925
About the object
Rudolf Großmann became known predominently for his many portrait drawings of contemporaries, which often also illustrated his journalistic texts in magazines and daily newspapers. The art critic and historian Julius Meier-Graefe, whom Großmann drew on several occasions, is also one of these contemporaries. In this instance, Meier-Graefe's face coalesces in a pen and ink drawing via fine outlines and contours that skilfully capture his facial expression. Großmann dispenses entirely with the suggestion of an upper body. Thus, the focus is entirely on the critic’s physiognomy.
