About the object

Susanne Kühn is an internationally-renowned artist who studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig as well as at the School of Visual Arts New York, among other places. She has been teaching painting at the Academy of Fine Art Nuremberg since 2015. Her figurative paintings combine an illusionistic style of painting with a conceptual approach and situate her painterly way of thinking in art history itself. For example, the large format drawing OWA is based on Derek Baegert's work (c. 1480/1485) depicting St Luke painting the Virgin Mary. In place of St Luke, Kühn has deliberately placed her own portrait. The title of the painting, Old Woman Artist, refers to a possible distant future of the artist, in which things pale into indistinguishable uncertainty on account of increasing myopia or faltering memory, whereas other things appropriate the space with an uncontrollable sense of hyper-precision and dimensionality.
