About the object

The sculpture shows Jesus and the virgin John, his favourite disciple as understood in medieval interpretation. He is resting on Christ's chest in the manner of a "bride". Devotional pictures of this kind were worshiped exclusively in southwest German convents. This group of figures comes from the Cistercian convent Wald near Meßkirch.
