About the object

The reverse glass painting of the Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden (1826-1907) is based on a painting by Franz Xaver Winterhalder. The liberal prince campaigned for equal rights, freedom of trade and the rights of the Jewish population. The reverse glass painting was made in the Benedikt Winterhalter workshop in Rötenbach.
After the death of Leopold, his son Friedrich took over the regency. As Grand Duke, he appointed the first liberal government in Baden in the year 1860. It introduced freedom of trade in 1862 and gave equal legal status to the Jewish minority. Although the majority of the population were Catholic, they held the Protestant monarch in great esteem.
