The Flagellation of Christ, 1725

About the object

The decorated box contains a series of figures representing the biblical scene of the Flagellation of Christ. Shortly before his death on the cross Jesus was flagellated and mocked by soldiers upon the instruction of Pontius Pilate. The scene is theatrical and recalls a stage set, especially by virtue of the decorated frame. Boxes of this kind, otherwise known as Känsterle, were intended for domestic use. In these could be kept and exhibited objects. Each box is a custom-made item.
