Mask
About the object
Woven yam mask originally painted with white and red paint. Yams play a central role in the area between Sepik and the coast in northeastern New Guinea, both as a source of food and in ceremonies. Special large taproots cultivated by the menfolk for the occasion are decorated and exhibited at festivities. The masks transform the yams into soulful beings. The origin of this mask is unclear, its design somewhat unusual.
