Mask

About the object

The barkcloth masks of the Baining, who live on the island of New Britain, were worn during nocturnal dances. Motifs from nature, such as the hornbill, frequently feature in the design. Each artist is responsible for his own design, and so each mask has its own individual character. The masks are still ubiquitous on the Gazelle peninsula in New Britain as an artistic expression of the region.
