Mat

About the object

This double mat, sewn in the style of a bag, was used where possible to keep smaller and more valuable mats. It has been made from banana leaves and, seemingly, originates from the Gilbert Islands (Kiribati). It is still unclear how this and other artefacts from there found their way into Antonie Brandeis’ collection. It is possible that she received it as a gift.
