Gargoyle: Lion Man representing one of the Seven Deadly Sins - Wrath, um 1310

About the object

The animalistic, exaggerated depiction of wrath personified is crowned by a pointed Jewish cap. It thus testifies to the contemporary attitude towards Jews, who were associated with the most diverse vices and blamed for all kinds of evil. From about the end of the 13th century onwards, the Christian majority in society greeted Jews and Judaism with in-creasing suspicion and open hostility. Since then, the idea of the superiority of Christianity over the Judaism also found its way into ecclesiastical art.
