Monstrance
Tower monstrance, nach 1500
About the object
This former monstrance, also called an "ostensorium" (Latin: ostendere = to show), is shaped like a tower: buttresses with pinnacles, a tracery spire with cutouts, a gallery of ogees and finials dominate the architectural structure, crowned by the figure of the Madonna. Instead of the vessel itself, there is crucifixion group in the middle, which was inserted at a later date.
