About the object
There are numerous necklaces made from shells and plant material found within Antonie Brandeis’ collection. This necklace, composed of fine segments of a rare, red shell (see II/0766a), is an especially beautiful and rare example. In her comment on the artefact, the collector describes its production: "Every shell has only one red spot or fleck, which is can be hammered out and, by means of pumice, rubbed back and forth on a stone until the necessary shape and smoothness is achieved. Behind every segment of the necklace there is a process that can take between an hour and up to a number of days."
